Hart County is a county located in the south central portion of Kentucky, and has a population of about 18,000. Vacant houses are sometimes also used as drug houses and sites where prostitution occurs, and several local cases have involved prostitution in adult book stores.  For example, in September, 2022, an adult book store was ordered by a court to close permanently, and was described by Hart County in court filings as a “house of prostitution.” The establishment on Flint Ridge Road, visible to motorists traveling on Interstate 65, had been the site of numerous investigations in prior years, including into the deaths of two people found on the premises in a room that authorities described as a place where live sex acts took place. The Hart County Sheriff’s Office conducted an extensive investigations covering years, with Hart Fiscal Court becoming involved in later stages. According to the sheriff’s office, undercover law enforcement investigating suspected illegal activity at the business beginning in 2019 observed multiple instances of commercial sex acts there.
