Batchtown is a village in the southern end of Calhoun County, Illinois. Its population is less than 200, but cases prostitution and related crimes have occurred there. Consumer level demand provides the revenue stream for all prostitution and sex trafficking, and has therefore been targeted by local law enforcement agencies as a strategy for prevention and response. Prostitution demand reduction tactics have been used within the village.  For example, in August, 2022, three people were arrested and faced drug charges in Calhoun County. A Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputy conducted a traffic stop on Illinois River Road near Franklin Hill Road, south of Hardin. The driver and her passenger were arrested for charges including DUI-drugs and unlawful possession of a controlled substance (crack cocaine) and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Following an investigation by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the driver was also charged with prostitution, and the sheriff’s office followed up with the criminal investigation and executed a search warrant at a residence on Franklin Hill Road in Batchtown, within rural Calhoun County. A man was then arrested and charged with Calhoun County warrants for soliciting a sexual act and “patronizing a prostitute.”  He also was charged with unlawful possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia. Subsequent to the execution of the search warrant, deputies took a man into custody for two counts of soliciting a sexual act and two counts of “patronizing a prostitute.”  The man’s identity was publicly disclosed, and he was the same man who had been arrested the previous month. He had posted bail on those previous offenses and was out on bond at the time the new crimes occurred.
