Burr Ridge is a village in Cook and DuPage counties that is a suburb of Chicago, Illinois.  Its population is roughly 11,000. Prostitution activity has been well-documented in the village, and throughout both counties. This activity and the problems and ancillary crimes it generates results in complaints to law enforcement agencies from residents and businesses. Among the more serious crimes associated with the local commercial sex market is sex trafficking.  For example, in May, 2012, two people who were arrested for prostitution and pandering at a hotel on Frontage Road in Burr Ridge. They were held in DuPage County jail pending a trial. They were arrested after two men came to the police station to report that they had been receiving text messages from a female friend who said she was being held against her will and being forced to “do things she didn’t want to do” and she asked them to come and pick her up.   They were concerned because she seemed to be in distress, and when they went to pick her up and were unable to make contact with her, they became suspicious and then went to Burr Ridge police with their concerns. The DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office was notified, and a member of the Special Victims Unit (SVU), responded to the Burr Ridge Police Department. Search warrants were prepared and obtained for the hotel room, where the two were staying, and for DNA samples of the two suspects. The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office was called, and their Forensic Investigation Unit assisted with the forensic processing of the room. The victim told police she had been sexually assaulted, and police took her to to be examined. After the victim was released from the hospital, she was interviewed at the Burr Ridge Police station. The Assistant State’s Attorney approved charges  for pandering and prostitution, class four felonies. In the prior five years, there had been two arrests for prostitution at the same hotel in Burr Ridge, and one arrest for prostitution at another hotel in the town. In 2018, a major international sex trafficking organization was investigated and prosecuted wit local and regional activity, with over 30 defendants, including one Burr Ridge resident.

Consumer level demand provides the revenue stream for all prostitution and sex trafficking, and has therefore been targeted by local law enforcement agencies as a strategy for prevention and response.  A law enforcement respondent to the 2021 National Assessment Survey reported that street-level reverse stings and the seizure of sex buyer vehicles have been used in Burr Ridge, and the use of public education and surveillance cameras specifically targeting sex buyers have also occurred in the city, all since 2021.
