The City of Orange is a township of roughly 31,000 residents, situated just east of Newark near Irvington in Essex County, NJ. Although instances of prostitution and sex trafficking are limited in the area, efforts to reduce the demand for prostitution in the township have occurred. The Orange Police Department has conducted at least one street-level reverse sting in the community. For example, in September 1994, the Newark Star-Ledger reported that Orange Police had recently completed “three sweeps resulting in 24 arrests for prostitution.” The stings were conducted “in the area of William Street and Glenwood Avenue,” and resulted in the arrest of 12 sex buyers and 12 prostituted women. It is unclear if the OPD released the names and other identifying information of those apprehended in the days following their arrest.
