Wiggins is a city of under 4,300 residents and is the county seat of Stone County, Mississippi. It is part of the GulfportBiloxi Metropolitan Statistical Area. Prostitution and related crimes have been documented in the city. For example, in 2016 a sting operation led to the arrest of four people on prostitution and drug charges. Consumer level demand provides the revenue stream for all prostitution and sex trafficking, and hasbeen targeted by local law enforcement agencies as a strategy for prevention and response. At least one web-based reverse sting has occurred in the city. In October 2019, eight individuals were arrested in a prostitution sting conducted by the Pine Belt Human Trafficking Task Force at a Wiggins hotel. The task force, of which the Wiggins Police Department is a member, took into custody those who set up encounters to buy sex with children. One of the men arrested was a Public Works Supervisor for the City of Tylertown. He was charged with felony enticement of a child for sex. Three woman were charged with misdemeanor prostitution and two men were charged with felony promoting of prostitution. In addition, two men were charged with misdemeanor procuring prostitution. Their names and identities were released to the press.
