Waterford is a town of under 9,000 residents in Saratoga County, New York. It is located approximately 11 miles north of the state capital in Albany. Prostitution and sex trafficking have been documented in the town and surrounding areas and have resulted in complaints to law enforcement by residents.

In April 2021, a Waterford man was arrested after allegedly trying to pay another adult $60 to sexually abuse a 14-year-old. The FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office announced the man was charged with attempted sex trafficking of a child, which could result in at least 10 years to life in prison with 5 years to life of supervised release, along with being required to register as a sex offender, if convicted. The offender later admitted to the act and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
