Wallkill is a town of about 29,000 residents, located in southern New York’s Orange County near Poughkeepsie and Middletown. Prostitution and sex trafficking in the town have been well documented, and have resulted in complaints to the police by residents. In their efforts to reduce prostitution locally, law enforcement have staged multiple reverse stings in the community. For example, in September and November 2015, and again in March 2016, New York State Police officers intercepted a total of 16 male sex buyers during stings in Wallkill. Media outlets publicized the names and mugshots of those arrested, and indicated they had each been intercepted after soliciting a NYSP decoy. In March 2020, New York State Police arrested five men on a misdemeanor charge of patronizing prostitution following an investigation into prostitution at a local motel in Wallkill. They were all issued appearance tickets returnable to Wallkill Town Court.
