Spartanburg is a city of approximately 37,000 residents, located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. Local prostitution is well documented and has presented persistent and visible problems in the area for decades, including cases of related assaults, child endangerment, drug offenses, and sex trafficking  To address these crimes and other negative impacts of the local sex trade, the Spartanburg Police Department has incorporated the use of street-level reverse stings to identify and arrest sex buyers. Implemented since at least 1990, the operations typically use an undercover female officer, who serves as a decoy in areas of the city known for commercial sex. When sex buyers attempt to solicit sex from her, they are apprehended by police. The Spartanburg Police Department has at times released the names and photos of arrestees to the local media.
