Shorter is a town of about 350 residents in Macon County, AL. Macon County is located in the east central part of the state, and county seat is Tuskegee. The town of Shorter lies about midway between Tuskegee and Montgomery, AL. Instances of prostitution have been documented in the city and surrounding areas. The Shorter Police Department is also a member of the Middle District of Alabama’s Human Trafficking Task Force.
In response to a survey conducted in 2021 by the NCOSE team for a National Institute of Justice grant to update and expand Demand Forum (Grant #2020-75-CX-0011), representatives from the town government reported that the following tactics have been implemented in the town, all beginning in 2006: street level reverse stings, public education, community service, and “Dear John” letters or messages sent to the homes of known or suspected sex buyers.
