Rumford is a town in Oxford County, Maine, that has a population of about 6,000.  Prostitution and sex trafficking are know to occur in the city.  For example, in July, 2019, two people were arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a child, according to Rumford police. Police had received a complaint that a child under the age of 12 was sexually assaulted during the first part of the year in Rumford.  Police officers arrested a man who was charged with two counts of gross sexual assault, one count of sexual misconduct with a child, one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of patronizing the prostitution of a minor, police said. The woman was charged with one count of accomplice liability to the crime of gross sexual assault, one count of sexual exploitation of a minor and one count of aggravated sex trafficking. Both were taken to the Oxford County Jail, where they are expected to appear in court the same week. Police seized the evidence and turned it over to the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Task Force.

In March, 2021, a Rumford attorney was arrested in Florida, after a 3-year investigation into alleged gross sexual assault allegations for events that had occurred in Rumford. The investigation began in 2018 when a 34-year-old woman told Rumford Police that he had allegedly sexually assaulted her. The man was a practicing attorney in the Rumford area, at the time of the accusations. The local District Attorney asked Maine State Police to handle the case, in conjunction with Rumford Police and the District Attorney’s Office in Hancock County. Police say the nature of the complaint and the evidence involved, including reviews of warrants and records, caused the investigation to take more than 3 years.  The man was charged with attempted gross sexual assault, attempted aggravated sex trafficking, unlawful sexual contact, engaging in prostitution, and domestic violence assault. Police were assisted in the investigation by the U.S. Marshal’s Service and Florida Caribbean/Regional Fugitive Task Force.
