Pontotoc County is a county of over 31,000 residents in northern Mississippi. Its county seat is Pontotoc. Prostitution and sex trafficking have been documented within the county. Consumer level demand provides the revenue stream for all prostitution and sex trafficking, and has therefore been targeted by local law enforcement agencies as a strategy for prevention and response. There has been at least one case of child sex trafficking, which led to an arrest. In June 2019, a sex trafficking investigation in Pontotoc County led to the arrest of two men and one woman after a 16-year-old girl was allegedly sexually abused by a 46-year-old man for money. The 16-year-old girl and an 18-year-old girl had run away from a local residential treatment center. One man and the woman picked up the two teenage girls in May and took them to their home, where another man allegedly paid the 16-year-old girl for sex and the couple collected the money. The couple was charged with human trafficking after a four-week investigation conducted by the Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Department of Child Protective Services. The other man was charged with procuring prostitution in connection with the incident, which allegedly occurred at the trafficker’s residence. The sex buyer’s name, age, and hometown were released to local media outlets.
