Platte County is located in eastern Nebraska, and has a population of approximately 33,000. Its county seat is the city of Columbus.  Sex trafficking and prostitution activity is well documented in the region. For example, in May, 2012, a Columbus man was arrested in a child sex trafficking case.   Local efforts to address these crimes have included the use of demand reduction tactics, including arrests of sex buyers, employment loss,  the public disclosure of identities.  For example, in October, 2012, the principal of Platte County High School resigned his position after being arrested in a Kansas City, Missouri, prostitution sting. He was arrested the prior week after he allegedly responded to an online ad to meet with a prostituted woman at a Northland motel. Kansas City Missouri Police say that they placed the ad as part of a sting operation, saying that the suspect agreed to pay an undercover female detective posing as a prostituting person $150 for sex acts. A 2020 report, the Platte County Comprehensive Juvenile Services Community Plan (2021 – 2025), presented statistics showing that there had been eight arrests for “purchasing prostitution” in 2018-2019 in Columbus.
