North Bellport is a hamlet of approximately 12,000 residents within the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. Sex trafficking and prostitution are well-documented problems throughout Suffolk County, including North Bellport. To address community complaints about prostitution and curb the associated crimes, reverse stings have been conducted. The stings are conducted to reduce the consumer-level demand that drives prostitution. The first reverse sting in the city was conducted in 1993 and resulted in the arrest of seven sex buyers, whose identities were released to local news outlets. In 2007, a reverse sting resulted in the arrest of seven sex buyers whose names, ages, and home addresses were disclosed in news reports.
