Morgan City is a community of approximately 11,000 residents located by the Atchafalaya River in St. Mary Parish, about midway between New Orleans and Lafayette along Route 90 in southern Louisiana. Cases of sex trafficking and prostitution have been documented in the city, generating complaints from citizens and local businesses, and have been associated with a wide range of other crimes.

Among the tactics used to address these problems are those that focus on consumer-level demand. For example, in 2017 Morgan City Police arrested five men at a local hotel in connection with an ongoing investigation into online prostitution ads. The five men were booked for solicitation of prostitution. They allegedly appeared at a Morgan City hotel in response to an online ad. Instead of being greeted by the prostituted woman they thought they were meeting, they were arrested by detectives when they tried to follow through with the purchase of sex. The identities of the men were released in news reports.
