Daphne is a city of approximately 22,000 residents, located in Baldwin County, Alabama, along the eastern shore of the Mobile Bay. Incidents of prostitution and prostitution-related violence, specifically in and around the city’s hotels and motels, have been reported in the city for several years.

In 1992, for example, the community drew significant media attention after a prostituted woman was “repeatedly raped and sodomized at gunpoint by four men in a Daphne motel after she accepted $150 to have sex with one of them.” The men were convicted of first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy charges; they would later be implicated in a similar attack in Mobile.

To curtail prostitution activity in Daphne, the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office has conducted at least one reverse sting targeting sex buyers. In early 2008, the BCSO’s Baldwin County Drug Task Force arrested 20 johns at a local motel after the men arranged to pay for sex with a female undercover officer. According to media reports, the BCSO placed decoy advertisements for escort services in the Mobile Press-Register in the weeks leading up to the sting and arranged meetings with the men who responded. In the days following the sting, all of the arrestees’ names were released to the public.
