Central Point is an Oregon city in Jackson County with a population of about 18,600 residents. The city shares its southern border with the city of Medford and is a part of the Medford metropolitan area. Prostitution and sex trafficking activity have been documented in the city and surrounding areas. This activity and the problems and ancillary crimes it generates results in complaints to law enforcement agencies.
To combat these issues, law enforcement has targeted consumer-level demand for commercial sex, which provides the revenue stream driving all commercial sex and trafficking. For example, in June 2008, the Central Point Police Department and Medford Police Department conducted a joint web-based operation after each had uncovered information online and from informants, leading them to suspect that prostitution was occurring locally. Detectives conducted stings at local motels over a two-day period. The operation resulted in the arrest of three male sex buyers and four prostituted women. The identities of arrested sex buyers were included in press releases.
