Berlin is a town of approximately 20,000 residents, located near Hartford and Meriden in central Connecticut. Prostitution and sex trafficking have been reported in the community for decades years, with activities often concentrated along the Berlin Turnpike. Among the other crimes occurring within local commercial sex transactions sex trade have been crimes against sex buyers. For example, in March, 2018, a 23-year-old man who showed up at a Berlin Turnpike motel to meet a prostituted woman for paid sex was robbed instead.
In an effort to reduce these and other related crimes, the Berlin Police Department has conducted street-level reverse stings. In September 2011, for example, BPD officers collaborated with FBI agents and officers from the nearby city of Meriden to arrest those seeking to purchase sex along the Berlin Turnpike. A total of five men were apprehended. The names and ages of all offenders were publicly released.
