Chambers County is in southeast Texas, abutting Galveston County in the greater Houston metropolitan area, and has a population of close to 49,000 residents as of 2019. Public officials, business owners, and local residents have reported problems with prostitution and cases of sex trafficking have occurred in the county.
Chambers County deputies have conducted operations focusing on apprehending sex buyers, and have also participated in regional operations. For example, in November 2015 they collaborated in a reverse sting operation in Texas City that led to the arrest of 11 men allegedly seeking prostitutes. Four officers posed as prostitutes in an operation, and the support team included officials from the Texas City crime suppression unit, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, the League City Police Department, and Texas City police code enforcement. A police official at the time said they used undercover officers from neighboring jurisdictions like League City and Chambers County so the sex buyers are less likely to suspect them as decoys. In October, 2021, a similar operation led to the arrest of three men charged with solicitation of prostitution in Chambers County after an undercover operation by the Sheriff’s Office.
