Jasper is a city of approximately 14,000 residents located in Walker County in northern Alabama. In May 2011, members of the Walker County Sheriff’s Office’s Narcotics Enforcement Team (NET) conducted a street-level reverse sting outside one of the city’s motels, using an undercover female officer as a decoy. The operation resulted in the arrest of four sex buyers, all of whom had their names and other identifying information released to the media. When asked by local news outlets about commercial sex sales in Jasper, one NET officer stated that “prostitution is something rarely [seen] in the county, but it does happen from time to time, [and] it is something that breeds other problems like drugs… [it is the WCSO’s hope that] people will hear about this arrest and if they are thinking about doing it, they will think twice.”
