Cherokee County is located in eastern Alabama, near the Georgia border, and has a population of about 25,000. Consumer level demand provides the revenue stream for all prostitution and sex trafficking, and has therefore been targeted by local law enforcement agencies as a strategy for prevention and response. For example, in March, 2014, law enforcement responded to complaints from the community and conducted a prostitution sting in Cherokee County that netted the arrest of six sex buyers. The operation, conducted at an undisclosed location, was led by the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, with the support of the Centre, Rainbow City and Anniston Police Departments, the District Attorney’s Office, the Alabama Fire Marshal’s Office, and the Alcohol Beverage Control Board. All six men were booked into the Cherokee County Detention Center. Some of the men posted bond (set at $300 – $500 ) and were released, while others remained incarcerated. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office released to the public the names and mugshots of all of the arrestees.
